Enough Trouble for Today

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” – Matthew 6:34

Can I get a “ReTweet” on that?

“Each day has enough trouble of its own.” …Jesus, coming in hot, with the understatement of eternity.

And yet, I find myself unable to fall asleep at night, thinking about the things of tomorrow. The things of next week, next month, next year.

Even though I cannot see beyond the here and now. Even though I cannot know what will happen in even the next 5 minutes, I still fix my attention on thinking about all of the things that may or may not happen and what I can do to prepare for them.

Preparation is, innately, not ungodly. I think there’s room to be good stewards of the time and resources that God has given us and that often involves planning.

But I know so many of my thoughts are wasted worrying about things that I cannot control or predict when that time can be better spent turning those things over to God and then growing in and praising Him.

It’s easier said than done, of course. And it seems like just when we think we have a Godly attitude about one situation, another problem to worry about lurks around the corner waiting for the world’s most inopportune time.

What is not inopportune is God’s timing, His plan, and His omniscient wisdom.

May we cling to this, knowing that ultimately the final ending of the story and that the victory over worry, doubt, and fear has been defeated.
